“The Unknown Masterpiece” by Honore de Balzac
Monday 10th September 2018, 2-4pm
Gleneagles Tea Rooms
Join us for the Words & Pictures book club where we read and discuss novels in which visual art and artists are relevant to the narrative.
At our September meeting we turn to mid-19th-century French fiction and Honore de Balzac’s “The Unknown Masterpiece” – the story of a painter who might be a failure, might be a genius – which inspired numerous modern artists, including Picasso, who made a series of illustrations for the story in the 1930s.
The Unknown Masterpiece” is published by The New York Review of Books (2001); one of Picasso’s illustrations, c/o http://www.openculture.com
