“Forever Art Endureth” – The Beecroft Collections & The Art of Alan Sorrell
Alan Sorrell: Summer Scene (part of triptych) [1956; Beecroft]
Now that The Beecroft Art Collections are online, this morning we’ll pick out some particularly interesting to tell the story of the gallery itself, the collectors Walter Beecroft and Sydney Thorpe-Smith, bringing into focus the paintings of a variety of artists, including Alan Sorrell.
Saturday 28th October:
Gainsborough, Constable and Munnings: Three Artists of Suffolk
These three names stand proud in the history of British landscape painting. As we’ll see today, Thomas Gainsborough all but invented the art of the landscape in the 18th century; the exhibition of John Constable’s paintings in Paris inspired a generation of French artists in the 19th century and Alfred Munnings gloried in the adventure of rural life and horse-racing in the 20th.
Saturday 25th November:
The East Anglian School of Painting
In the late 1930s, two artists Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett Haines set up The East Anglian School of Painting in Dedham. Alfred Munnings was not impressed: their art was far too modern! One of their first students was Lucien Freud; Maggi Hambling studied there in the 1960s. Today we’ll tell the history of the school and its contribution to 20th century British art.
Saturday 9th December:
The Great Bardfield Artists
The Essex village of Great Bardfield became home to a diverse group of artists in the post-war years including most famously Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious. Much of their work is now represented in the Fry Gallery (Saffron Walden). Today we shall tell the group’s story and explore their art – from painting to printing.
Meetings are held 10.30am – 12.30pm in the Beecroft Gallery.
Each talk costs £10 and includes tea/coffee (biscuits!)
